Pricing a Hawaii Cruise

There are eight major islands and more than 120 minor reefs and islands in the Hawaiian island chain. Cruising is a way to visit many of the main islands in a short period of time without multiple airfares or having to pack and unpack in each port. Enjoy lush tropical forests, fabulous beaches, rugged volcanic landscapes, steep mountains, carefully groomed golf courses, snorkeling, nightlife and more.

Typical costs:

    * Fares for 7-day roundtrips from Honolulu run $520-$1,100 for a standard cabin; $1,000-$1,650 for one with a balcony; and $1,600-$3,000 for a suite. Airfare to Hawaii is extra.
    * 10-15-night cruises departing from the western mainland (anywhere from Ensenada, Mexico to Vancouver, BC and numerous ports in-between) start around $900-$2,700 for a cabin; $1,500-$2,900 for a balcony; and $1,700-$4,700 or more for a suite.
    * Some cruises of 15-31 days are available at prices ranging from $1,100-$4,500 or more.
    * Hawaiian cruises are offered year round. The best weather is summer and fall, when the islands get the least amount of rain. Summer and Christmas season are the most popular and therefore at the higher end of the price range. Except for holidays, cruises are cheapest November-February.

What should be included:

    * Standard stops include Honolulu on Oahu; Kona on the Island of Hawaii; Lahaina or Kahului on Maui; Kauai; Lanai; and Molokai. CruiseCritic.com lists intriguing Hawaiian port excursions.
    * USA Today explains which type of travelers most enjoy seeing Hawaii from a ship.
    * For wildlife enthusiasts, dolphins are usually visible from ships year-round, but migrating whales are seen in Hawaii only in the winter months.

Additional costs:

    * Port taxes and other fees vary; be sure they’re included in the quoted fare.
    * On-shore activities are extra, and prices vary depending widely depending on what’s involved.
    * Onboard tipping adds $5-$10 daily per traveler, or an additional $70-$140 for a couple on a seven-day trip. Some cruise lines, such as Radisson Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Windstar, include tips in the price.
    * Luxury ships generally include everything except bar tabs and port excursions, while lower-priced vessels may charge for special shows, restaurants, spa treatments or other shipboard amenities, which can double the cost of a low-priced fare.

Discounts:

    * Many cruise lines offer discounts for seniors or for early bookings. If traveling with a large group of family and friends, ask about a group rate.
    * Look for last minute bargains on cruises that haven’t sold out.

Hawaii Cruise Passenger Capacity to Decline in 2008

According to the latest Honolulu Harbor passenger and cruise vessel schedules posted on the state Department of Transportation Harbors Division website, annual passenger capacity aboard NCL America’s home-ported ships is expected to decline 32.1 percent in 2008, as NCL America suspends service aboard the Pride of Hawai‘i.However, as home-ported capacity downsizes, capacity aboard foreign flagged ships is expected to rise +19.5 percent next year. Nonetheless, total cruise passenger capacity into Honolulu is presently estimated to decrease 16.3 percent in 2008.

Year-to-date through May, statewide cruise visitor arrivals to Hawai‘i have surged 43.5 percent (to 219,710 visitors), outpacing the growth in overall arrivals to the state (-0.5%), according to DBEDT

Hawaii may not be ready for Superferry

There’s been a lot of anticipation about the superferry coming to Hawaii and I have to say that I’ve been caught up in this anticipation as well. When I first heard about the ferry coming, I thought it would be a great idea and as a travel agent, I was thinking of all the possibilities that this could open up. For example; we could create all-inclusive packages that include a car and our clients could simply drive onto the ferry then disembark and drive to their hotel or any activity that they choose. I also thought it would be great for people who live here who will finally be able to get to some of the other islands pretty easily with their car.I love driving my car however, there’s not too many places you can drive after awhile; you pretty much drive around in circles here so I looked forward to the idea of maybe driving up to Haleakala or a ride down Front Street! So as days approached for the ferry to come to Hawaii I kept checking to see when you would be able to purchase tickets online and finally last week they started accepting reservations for later in August because they do not have a start date for the first voyage. I decided to make reservations for a date in August and started to drill down through their website to add the various components for the reservation. I selected 2 adults, the Premium upgrade, and one car, the total price was $466.33 WHAT!!! Wait a minute I said, I don’t think I’m quite ready to spend 500 bucks to go over to Maui plus a three hour boat ride!!! Additionally, when I get there I have to have pay for a hotel for the night because the ferry won’t be back until the next day

And then it hit me!! This superferry may not be such a good idea after all especially from a cost/time perspective. Think about this, you have to get yourself together and drive on down to the port, wait on a line if you have a car, and get your car through their inspection, then you have to find seats on the ferry, then you have to eat, yes, more money!! You also need or four or five hours to spare because that’s how long this whole fun trip is going to take.

The jury is still out on the superferry and I really hope that we can find some ways to make this work for us both to the tourist and for Kamaaina. I will certainly take the ferry as soon as I have an extra of $466 to spare but in the meantime I think taking the ferry might be a little too expensive. Especially when you fly the neighbor Islands for half the price.

Tips for first time Hawaii cruisers

If you’re a first-time cruiser and you chose any one of the NCL seven-day cruises you made the right decision. These cruises are great for first-timers because they are seven days and offer a lot land time. You don’t have to worry about being on the open seas for very long so just in case cruising turns out not to be for you,  there’s really not a whole lot of sailing going on. The Hawaii cruises are designed to give you a lot of land time you get overnights in both Maui and Hawaii which gives you the opportunity to experience the islands. I equate the cruise to a floating hotel that travels from island to island.

Another other reason is great is because first-time cruisers don’t have any other cruise ships to compare this to; the NCL’s product is quite different from those of the other cruise  lines. They have freestyle cruising which means there’s no preset meals and the formal nights are optional. The Hawaii cruises also have the only All-American crew in the world, this makes the experience quite different and it’s very comforting for first-time cruisers because all of the crew members are from the United States and could speak our language and our very personable.

First-time cruisers very often wonder where they should stay on the ship and again because the ship doesn’t cruise that much it’s not as an important issue however, it’s always advisable to be as close to make ship is possible and most people like to be as high up on the ship is possible, the reason for this is because if you’re on the lower deck you generally have to go up to the various decks which have the restaurants and activities.

If you’re considering a Hawaii Cruise as your first adventure on the seas then any one of the three ships sailing here would be a good choice. Happy cruising!

NCL offers new Luau at Gaylords on Kauai

NCL America (NCLA), in partnership with Kilohana Plantation and NH Productions, hosted a grand opening of its brand new lu‘au and dinner show for the community on Friday, April 27. Lu‘au Kalamaku promises to be one of Hawai‘i’s most exciting and entertaining experiences offered nowhere else in the islands. The experience will offer traditional Hawaiian games, arts and craft lessons, a hula show and a theatrical production. Guests will also have the opportunity to sample popular island favorites lomi lomi salmon, poi, taro bread and kalua pig catered by Gaylord’s Restaurant. A train ride on Kaua‘i Plantation Railway or a vintage Clydesdale carriage ride through the plantation’s 35-acre estate will also be available as additional featured activities.

“Hawai‘i is a very special place and passengers cruising NCL America ships are here to experience Hawaiian culture and learn about Hawai‘i’s heritage,” said Robert Kritzman NCL America Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Hawai‘i Operations. “Lu‘au Kalamaku tells a tale about Hawaiian culture and values through a one-of-a-kind theatrical performance which weaves in ancient and modern dances from the Tahitian, Hawaiian and American traditions.”

Lu‘au Kalamaku is a heartwarming story created by well-known director, producer and performer Haunani Asing Marston and Nanea Tuttle of NH Productions. Marston, a former Miss Hawai‘i, recently returned to Kaua‘i after working for four years in Washington D.C. with the Congress on Homeland Security issues. Marston produced, directed and starred in the Princeville Hotel Lu‘au, “Nani Hanalei o ke kai,” for five years and prior to that produced, directed and starred in Tahiti Nui Family Style Lu‘au, “Aloha Kaua‘i,” for 14 years. Her credits also include stage productions of “South Pacific” at Kilohana Plantation, “Monarchy Nights,” “Some Enchanted Evenings,” and “After Eight” from Big Band Productions/Lionman Records.

The original storyline, which will feature an all Kaua‘i cast, tells the tale of one family’s journey from Tahiti to Kaua‘i. Original music for the production was created by Marston, Halani Boshard and Michael Ruff and choreographed in a collaborative effort by some of Kaua‘i’s top talent, including Kathleen and Alani Woodward, former Merrie Monarch Miss Aloha Hula and Kumu Hula Healani Youn, Kumu Hula Doric Yarvis, Pualani Avaeoru, and Stephania Zenato.

HAL’s Hawaii ms Zaandam Features Emissions Reduction System

Holaand Ameica’s ms Zaandam which salis in Hawaiian waters, will feature new emission-reduction technology recently installed during a two-week dry-dock. In cooperation with several U.S. and Canadian government and regulatory agencies, Holland America has launched a technology demonstration project, designed to demonstrate the feasibility of using sea water to "scrub," or reduce, engine emissions on oceangoing vessels.

"This is a ship like no other in the cruise industry," said Stein Kruse, president and CEO of Holland America, "and after studies and modifications of the ship’s new test emissions technology, it could dramatically change not only the cruise industry but the entire maritime industry by reducing ship engine emissions."

The sea water scrubber system, developed by Krystallon, a subsidiary of BP, uses the natural chemistry of seawater to remove virtually all sulfur oxide (SOx) as well as significantly reduce particulate matter emissions. The sea water is then treated to remove harmful components while the calcium carbonate in seawater renders the sulfur oxides harmless by conversions to sulfates and neutral salts. The price tag tops more than $1.5 million and includes assistance of $300,000 from an Environmental Protection Agency/West Coast Collaborative grant and a $100,000 contribution from Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.

Additional support comes from the Port of Seattle, the Port of Vancouver, Environment Canada, B.C. Ministry of the Environment and the B.C. Clean Air Research Fund, as well as Krystallon. Each government agency has representatives serving on a technical advisory committee that oversees the development of this project. "This project shows how Holland America Line focuses on new technologies and best practices to bolster our existing award-winning environmental programs," said Kruse. "We will continue to go above and beyond international requirements, as we have for many years, now in the operation of our vessels."

Holland America also has a fleetwide program that emphasizes compliance with all international environmental guidelines, waste reduction and recycling, and a history of embracing new environmental technologies such as state-of-the-art water treatment systems, shore power while ships are in port, and an internationally recognized whale strike avoidance program. In June 2006, Holland America Line’s Environmental Management System received the international ISO 14001 certification, demonstrating that the company conforms to higher standards than what is just required by the letter of the law. Holland America’s ships currently meet or exceed all provisions of the international regulations governing the environmental management of marine operations. An environmental officer serves on each ship to oversee shipboard compliance and procedures. Each ship in the Holland America Line fleet undergoes a strict port- and flag-state inspection annually and a mandatory environmental audit conducted both by an outside environmental auditing firm and by internal staff. NCL Pride of Hawaii pullout a good idea

While the Pride of Hawaii may be leaving Hawaiian waters, one should not take that to mean NCL’s Hawaii cruise initiative is in trouble.  On the contrary,  The Pride of America and the Pride of Aloha have always been a success and will continue to operate offering 7,10 and 11 day itineraries. As a Hawaii based travel agent, I can tell you that  the introduction of the Hawaii cruise itineraries has been a welcome and needed alternative for travelers coming to Hawaii. As a result of NCL’s initiative, Hawaii has become a very popular cruise destination not only for NCL, but for other cruise lines as well.  With these other ships coming into the marketplace to get a piece of the pie,  it only made sense for NCL to take the Pride out of the mix for now and bring it back when demand allows.

The Hawaii Cruise ship itineraries make it  possible for people from all over the world to see the islands like never before, offering overnights on both Maui and Kauai. Additionally they, fulfill an important need in the marketplace by giving consumers a all-inclusive experience in Hawaii in only seven days,  at a great price. Perfect for both families and honeymooners alike.

NCL  showed a lot of profitability with both the Pride of Aloha and Pride of America before the Pride of Hawaii ever came here to Hawaii. These 2 ships have the most experienced American crew members who have been here in the Hawaiian Islands many years now.  They know what they’re doing and offer excellent customer service. Many people have told me they prefer the American crew to foreign crews because they have great personalities, they’re American and likewise can communicate with cruisers more effectively.

Cruises in Hawaii have now become part of the tourism landscape in Hawaii and will remain so for many years to come.  If you get the chance to come to Hawaii don’t hesitate to book a NCL cruise to Hawaii, you’ll be very happy that you did.
